Las Vegas, NV – Choosing a name is one of the first decisions a new company makes, and one of the hardest. Many founders find a name they like, only to learn the .com was registered years ago. Large domain marketplaces offer many options: Atom lists more than 450,000 names and BrandBucket more than 100,000 (as of September 2026). For some founders, a list that size can take many hours to search.
Halstor, a Spark The Media company, has launched as a smaller alternative. Halstor is a domain marketplace for startups where every name is a short .com, chosen by hand. A small team checks every name with the same three tests: easy to say, easy to remember, and room to grow. The full list is a few hundred names, so founders can look through all of it in one sitting. Most names are 5 to 7 letters long, most were registered 15 or more years ago, and lease-to-own is offered on select names.
Alongside the marketplace, Halstor has released a free AI startup name generator. Founders describe their startup in a sentence or two, and the generator matches the idea with short .com names from Halstor’s current listings, with the price shown for each one. Unlike most name generators, it does not invent new names. Every suggestion is a real .com that is for sale now, and names are removed from results as soon as they are sold. The generator is free, needs no account, and replies in the language the founder writes in.
“Most name generators give founders ideas, and then the .com turns out to be taken,” said Tom Davis, Brand Strategy Manager at Halstor. “We built ours the other way around. Every name it suggests is a real .com that a founder can buy today, and our list is small enough to look through in one sitting.”
According to Halstor, the most common problems founders run into when choosing a domain name are:
- The .com for their favorite name is already registered
- Adding words like “get,” “try,” or “app” to find an open .com
- Choosing .io or .co while many customers still type .com
- Very large catalogs that take hours to search
- Names that are hard to spell after hearing them once
Many founders compare several marketplaces, such as Atom, BrandBucket, Brandpa, and Afternic, before choosing a name. Halstor is built for founders who prefer a short list of short .com names over a very large catalog. The company also recommends that founders check trademark records in the countries where they plan to do business before buying any domain.
